Trump and Harris to debate on ABC

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Democratic opponent Kamala Harris will debate on Sept. 10 on ABC, setting up the first face-to-face match-up between the rivals in what polls show is a close race.

In a news conference at his Palm Beach, Florida, residence, Trump said he wanted additional debates on Sept. 4 and Sept. 25 that would air on Fox (FOXA.O), opens new tab and NBC (CMCSA.O), opens new tab. Harris said in a post on X that she was looking forward to the Sept. 10 debate after Trump “finally committed.”

Israel agrees to resume Gaza truce talks on August 15: PM

 Israel has agreed to resume Gaza ceasefire talks on August 15 at the demand of U.S., Qatari and Egyptian mediators, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Thursday. “Following the proposal of the United States and mediators, Israel will on August 15 send a delegation of negotiators to the agreed place to conclude the details of implementing a deal,” the office said in a statement.

Qatari, Egyptian and U.S. mediators earlier released a joint statement, calling on Israel and Hamas to restart talks on August 15 to close all remaining gaps in the proposed deal and begin implementing it without further delay.

China wrestles with ‘quantity over quality’ in generative AI patents

China has emerged as the world’s top producer of generative AI patents, but it is struggling to turn many of its ideas into action thanks to US export controls and longstanding struggles with its innovation culture at home.

In July, the UN’s intellectual property agency reported that China had filed more than 38,000 generative AI patents over the past decade, more than all other countries combined.

Russia’s Lipetsk region under ‘massive’ drone attack, governor says

Residents ordered to evacuate with fire reported at military airfield in region about 460 kilometres south of Moscow. Russia has begun evacuating people from parts of its western region of Lipetsk, after a “massive attack” by Ukrainian drones, regional governor, Igor Artamonov, said.

Writing on the Telegram messaging app in the early hours of Friday, Artamonov said Lipetsk had “been subjected to a massive UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] attack”.
