AI-browser pushes into search territory
OpenAI has introduced its new web browser “Atlas,” built around the ChatGPT model and designed to challenge Chrome’s dominance. The browser features a ChatGPT sidebar that summarizes web pages, compares products, and analyses data from any site. Paid users gain access to an “agent mode” that performs tasks on users’ behalf—such as shopping and trip-planning.
Browser war enters new phase
Despite Chrome’s global browser market share of about 72 percent, Atlas could siphon ad revenue if OpenAI evolves the product into a broader platform. OpenAI’s move signals its intent to expand beyond the chatbot and into core user behaviour online—search, browsing and task automation. Google responded by advancing its Gemini AI integration in Chrome. This competition could reshape digital advertising, data-collection models and browser ecosystems.
