President Joe Biden, speaking to the nation from the Oval Office Wednesday evening, framed his decision to step aside from the 2024 presidential race as a matter of saving democracy and passing “the torch to a new generation.”

In a poignant speech that marked the beginning of the closing chapter of his presidency and half-century in public service, Biden acknowledged that uniting the party required sacrificing personal ambition for what he sees as a greater good.

“I revere this office. But I love my country more,” the president said.

U.S. President Joe Biden addressed the nation on Wednesday for the first time since dropping his reelection bid, saying he decided to forgo personal ambition to save democracy in a sedate Oval Office speech that contrasted with the rough-and-tumble campaign.  Shortly before the speech, Republican Donald Trump laid into Democratic rival Kamala Harris in his first rally since she replaced Biden atop the ticket, signaling a bare-knuckled campaign ahead of the Nov. 5 election.
Israeli military confirms body of fifth captive returned from Gaza

The Israeli military has confirmed that it has returned the body of a fifth captive from Gaza.

They named the man as Ravid Katz, a member of the Nir Oz kibbutz security team who was killed on October 7 and his body taken to the Palestinian enclave.

Earlier, we reported that Israeli forces had recovered the bodies of four Israeli captives, two civilians and two soldiers, during an operation in the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

All five had already been declared dead by the Israeli military.

China, Russia agree to expand investment, energy cooperation

Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang visited Russia from Sunday to Tuesday. He attended the 11th meeting of the China-Russia Investment Cooperation Committee, the 21st meeting of the China-Russia Energy Cooperation Committee and the 6th China-Russia Energy Business Forum.
