Joint Patrol Over Pacific and Bering Sea
In a historic first, Russian and Chinese bombers conducted a joint patrol over the north Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea near Alaska.

Aircraft Involved and Responses
A Chinese H-6K bomber and a Russian Sukhoi Su-30CM jet fighter were involved in the patrol. The US-Canadian North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) intercepted the aircraft, which stayed in international airspace and posed no threat. However, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski called the patrol an “unprecedented provocation.”

Moscow and Beijing’s Stance
Both Moscow and Beijing claimed the patrol was not directed at any third party. China emphasized that the patrol had no connection to current international and regional situations.

Increased Cooperation Amid Sanctions
Since Western sanctions on Russia post-Ukraine invasion, Moscow and Beijing have strengthened their military ties. This joint patrol is the latest display of their deepening cooperation, causing concern in the US and Europe.

Reactions and Future Projections
NATO has accused China of enabling Russia’s actions in Ukraine, urging an end to its support. A recent US Department of Defence report highlighted the growing alignment between Russia and China, predicting continued military cooperation. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov argued that their collaboration promotes stability in the Arctic region.
