Kolkata rape-murder case: CBI grills hospital doctors, forensic experts

Hindustantimes, Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday questioned three forensic doctors who conducted the post-mortem examination on the 31-year-old junior doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, officials of the federal agency said.

The CBI team from Delhi visited the crime scene on Wednesday afternoon

The preliminary inquest and post-mortem examination were conducted at the same hospital after the woman’s body was found at the third-floor seminar hall of the chest department where she was on duty. The crime took place sometime between 3am and 5am on August 9, the post-mortem examination indicated, according to the police.

 US strikes deal to cut cost of 10 drugs for Medicare users

BBC : President Joe Biden has said he wants to stop handing drug companies a “blank cheque”, after the government announced a deal to significantly cut the cost of 10 common prescription drugs for millions of Americans.

The price cuts of between 38% to 79% will come into effect in 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) said.

They will apply to people enrolled in the Medicare programme, which provides health coverage for Americans aged 65 and over.

The new policy is expected to cover about nine million people who use at least one of the drugs, the Department of Health said.

 Thai ruling coalition backs Paetongtarn Shinawatra for prime minister

Nikkei Asia , BANGKOK — Thailand’s ruling Pheu Thai Party will nominate its 37-year-old leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra for prime minister when parliament votes Friday on a replacement for Srettha Thavisin, who was removed by the Constitutional Court.

Coalition parties announced the nomination on Thursday. With 314 coalition seats in the 500-member House of Representatives and barring any defections, Paetongtarn will likely become Thailand’s second female prime minister and Asia’s youngest head of government. She is a daughter of party boss and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
