The interim government has decided to reinstate the process of public hearings for determining electricity and gas prices, replacing the current system of setting prices through executive orders. This change comes as part of the amendment to the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Act 2023, which is set to be published today, 20 August.

Amendment to the BERC Act:
According to sources from the Electricity and Energy Department, the government will revert to the previous method by removing Section 34(a) from the Act. This section, amended in January of the previous year, allowed the government to directly adjust electricity and gas tariffs.

Impact on Consumers:
Power and Energy Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, speaking on 18 August, emphasized that no price hikes will be implemented unless absolutely necessary. He acknowledged that frequent price increases have caused significant public hardship. If needed, the BERC will conduct public hearings to ensure that any changes in pricing are fair and consider the public’s input.
