BLAST Condemns Gang Rape of Eighth Grader in Khagrachhari, Demands Justice

The Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) has strongly condemned the reported gang rape of an indigenous eighth-grade student in Khagrachhari. The rights organization has demanded a swift, impartial investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice, alongside adequate compensation, medical care, and long-term protection for the victim and her family.

The Incident

According to reports, the assault took place on Tuesday night in the Guimara area of Khagrachhari district. The student was allegedly attacked around 9 p.m. while on her way to a private tuition session. She was later found unconscious by relatives around 11 p.m. Police have already detained one of the suspects in connection with the case.

Protests and Social Unrest

The incident has sparked anger and protests in the region. Jumma student groups launched a blockade in Guimara in response to the crime. Clashes broke out between demonstrators and law enforcement during the protest, leaving one person dead and several others injured. The violence has heightened tension and outrage among local residents.

BLAST’s Statement

In an official statement, BLAST said that such horrific acts not only devastate individual lives but also undermine public safety and social stability. The organization emphasized the urgency of a comprehensive investigation and rapid trial.

BLAST also called on the authorities to ensure financial compensation for the victim’s family, along with immediate medical support and measures for long-term security.

Constitutional and Human Rights Violations

The organization stated that the incident constitutes a violation of several provisions of the Constitution of Bangladesh, including:

  • • Article 27: Right to equality before the law
  • • Article 28(1): Non-discrimination on grounds of religion or gender
  • • Article 31: Right to protection of the law
  • • Article 32: Right to life and personal liberty

BLAST further stressed that such violence not only breaches constitutional rights but also contravenes international human rights conventions to which Bangladesh is a party.

Call for Action

The organization urged the government and relevant authorities to take strong preventive measures to stop the recurrence of such crimes. It highlighted the need for prompt legal proceedings and broader efforts to reinforce social safety and public trust.
