A Global Call in the Test of Humanity

Sarakhon Report

Deep Concern Over the Humanitarian Crisis

His Eminence Cardinal Michael Felix Czerny SJ, head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, expressed deep concern over the prolonged suffering of Rohingya refugees and internally displaced people during a press conference held in Dhaka.

He said, “I have met internally displaced people in Narayanganj and Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar. In both cases, the situation is extremely difficult. Those living in camps have been enduring statelessness, unemployment, and restrictions for years — it’s truly unbearable. It is shameful that the international community has still not found a solution to this crisis.”

Dialogue as the Path to Effective Solutions

Cardinal Czerny emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving complex humanitarian issues such as migration and displacement. He said, “We must continue dialogue with authorities. Doors should never be closed. Through mutual exchange of views, we can find effective solutions — whether within the country or internationally.”

Field Visits and Humanitarian Solidarity

As part of his visit, Cardinal Czerny met with internally displaced families in Madanpur, Narayanganj, and visited Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.
He also met with street children, volunteers, and staff of Caritas Bangladesh, expressing empathy and support for their work.
His visit included interfaith prayers, family meetings, and visits to children’s centers, reflecting a spirit of compassion and unity.

A Call for Global Solidarity with the Rohingya

Cardinal Czerny urged the international community to show greater solidarity with Rohingya refugees, especially at a time when global attention and aid are declining.
He stated, “The current situation is extremely challenging. Both global focus and assistance are diminishing. This is not the time to reduce solidarity — it must be strengthened. Christian and all other organizations should respond to genuine humanitarian needs and stand beside those who suffer. We are helping, and we must continue this help.”

Attendees at the Press Conference

The press conference, held at the CBCB Center in Dhaka, was attended by Francesca Donna, Regional Coordinator for the Asian Continent; Bishop Gervas Rozario of Rajshahi and Chairman of the Justice and Peace Commission; and the Commission’s Secretary, Father Liton Hubert Gomes.
Approximately 40 journalists and writers were also in attendance at the event.

Cardinal Michael Felix Czerny’s visit not only highlighted the humanitarian dimensions of the Rohingya crisis but also conveyed a clear message of global responsibility and compassion.
He called upon the world to ensure that no one fails this great test of humanity.
