As of Friday, May 30, 2025, Bangladesh is experiencing widespread heavy rainfall and flooding caused by a deep depression that formed over the Bay of Bengal. The system made landfall on Thursday between Sagar Island (India) and Khepupara (Bangladesh), and has since moved inland. It is currently centered over Dhaka and surrounding regions.
Current Situation
- Rainfall and Flooding:
The depression has brought intense rainfall across the country. Dhaka recorded 86 mm of rain on Thursday, while Noakhali experienced 168 mm. Low-lying coastal districts such as Patuakhali, Barguna, Noakhali, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar have reported flooding due to heavy rain and tidal surges, leaving thousands stranded.

- Transportation Disruptions:
Ferry and river transport services have been suspended nationwide due to rough seas and flooding. Urban areas, including Dhaka, are experiencing severe waterlogging, causing traffic congestion and major disruptions to daily life.
- Warnings and Advisories:
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued local cautionary signal No. 3 for maritime ports and advised fishermen to stay ashore. River ports have been instructed to display warning signal No. 2. Additionally, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has warned of potential flash floods in low-lying areas of six divisions, including Chattogram, Sylhet, Mymensingh, and Rangpur, due to rising river levels.
