From June 1 to August 31, fishing in rivers and canals, along with tourist entry, will be banned in the Sundarbans to support fish and wildlife reproduction.
Seasonal Ban to Protect Ecosystem
The Sundarbans Forest Department has enforced this ban annually to promote the breeding of aquatic life and wildlife, and to reduce environmental pollution in the region. This year’s ban starts June 1 and lasts until August 31.
Strict Entry Restrictions
Since May 24, the issuance of entry permits for fishermen, honey collectors, and tourists has been suspended. No entry will be permitted during the ban period, confirmed Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the East Sundarbans.
Support for Local Livelihoods
A proposal is currently under review by the ministry to provide food assistance and incentives to fishermen who rely on the Sundarbans for their income. Tanzir Hasan, DFO of the West Sundarbans, stated that support will also extend to fish farmers, honey collectors, Mouals, and Bawalis during the ban.
Ongoing Conservation Efforts
This seasonal ban is a key conservation measure aimed at sustaining the Sundarbans’ delicate ecosystem by ensuring successful breeding cycles and reducing human impact.
