Daksu Election Process Put on Hold by High Court

The High Court has suspended the election process and the final voter list for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Daksu).
On Monday, a bench comprising Justice Habibul Gani and Justice Sheikh Tahsin Ali issued the order following a preliminary hearing on a writ petition. The court also issued a rule in conjunction with the order.
Election Schedule as Announced
According to the previously declared schedule, voting for both the Daksu and hall unions was set to take place on 9 September.
- Panels had already been announced by Chhatra Dal, Islami Chhatra Shibir, and Ganatantrik Chhatrasangsad.
- Left-leaning student groups had submitted two separate panels.
- In total, around 10 panels, both full and partial, were in the race.
Candidates and Competition
For 28 Daksu posts, 471 candidates were set to contest.
- Women candidates: 62
- The highest number of competitors was for member posts: 217
At the hall level, across 18 halls, a total of 1,035 candidates were confirmed to contest for 13 posts.

The Daksu election has long been a central issue in campus politics. Its outcomes often influence not only Dhaka University’s internal student politics but also the national political scene. With the High Court’s suspension order, the entire process now faces uncertainty.
