New controls aimed at protecting minors

OpenAI announced on Sept. 17 that it will introduce age-prediction technology and parental controls to route suspected users under 18 into a restricted, age-appropriate ChatGPT experience. The measures are meant to block graphic sexual content and provide alerts if the system detects acute self-harm risk.

Privacy trade-offs and regulatory attention

The company says safety for teens will sometimes take precedence over privacy, a shift that comes amid growing regulatory scrutiny and lawsuits over AI harms. Civil liberties groups and some parents may push back on age estimation and reporting policies.
