The IEA has flagged that the explosion of artificial-intelligence workloads could nearly double global data-centre energy consumption by 2030. With models growing in size, training complexity and compute power demand, the environmental footprint of digital infrastructure is gaining fresh scrutiny.

Calls for sustainable infrastructure
Governments and industry groups are now being urged to tie AI expansion to renewable energy deployment, efficient cooling, and circular-economy hardware design. Without proactive governance, the decarbonization of AI infrastructure may lag behind demand, undercutting net-zero ambitions.
