A series of planned arson attacks targeting Hindu households in Rauzan upazila of Chattogram has triggered widespread fear and concern among local residents. Police have announced a financial reward for anyone providing credible, actionable information to help identify those responsible, though the exact amount has not been disclosed.
The most recent incident took place in the Sultanpur area of Rauzan, where a Hindu family’s home was deliberately set on fire. Police said informants whose information leads to the identification and arrest of the perpetrators will be rewarded.
Senior Police Official Visits Fire-Damaged Home
On Wednesday, December 24, Deputy Inspector General of Chattogram Range Ahsan Habib Palash visited a fire-damaged house in Ward No. 5 of Sultanpur. Speaking to journalists at the site, he said police are treating the incidents with the utmost seriousness and will reward those who come forward with reliable, actionable information.
Locked From Outside Before Fire Was Set
According to police and local sources, the attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday. The home of Qatar-based expatriate Sukh Shil was set ablaze after the door was locked from the outside. At the time, his sister and brother-in-law, Anil Shil, were inside the house.
Although they managed to escape unharmed, the fire destroyed furniture, important documents, and other household belongings.
Damage Estimated at Up to One Million Taka
Preliminary police estimates put the financial damage from the fire at approximately Tk 800,000 to Tk 1 million. During the investigation, police recovered handwritten banners and papers containing the names and mobile numbers of political figures and administrative officials. These findings were confirmed in a press release issued by Chattogram District Police on Wednesday night.
Assurance of Support for Victims
Police officials said they have spoken with the affected family and assured them of financial assistance to help rebuild their home and recover from the loss.
Pattern Matches Earlier Attacks
Similar arson attacks were reported just days earlier in other parts of Rauzan. Early Saturday morning, the homes of Bimal Talukdar and Rubel Das in the Dheuyapara area of Ward No. 8 were set on fire using the same method—locking doors from the outside before igniting the blaze.
Residents later found that the doors had been tied with cloth, and that kerosene-soaked fabric had been discovered in the courtyards.
Earlier on Friday, arson attacks were also reported at the homes of Sadhan Barua in Ward No. 7 of Keutia and Sona Pal and Kamini Mohan Pal in Ward No. 9. Police recovered similar kerosene-mixed materials and handwritten notes from those locations as well.
Investigation Intensified
Police said investigations have been intensified to determine whether the incidents are linked and to identify those behind the repeated attacks. Authorities have assured that the perpetrators will be brought to justice as soon as possible.
