The explosion occurred at a madrasah building in Keraniganj, Dhaka, injuring four people, including a woman and a child. Police recovered cocktails, chemical substances, and different tools used to make bombs from the scene. In connection with the incident, the madrasah owner’s wife has been taken into custody for questioning.

The explosion occurred on Friday (26 December) at noon in a single-storey building at Ummal Qura International Madrasah in the Hasnabad area of South Keraniganj.

Residents said the madrasah was run by a man named Sheikh Al Amin. Around noon, a sudden loud blast rocked the madrasah. Within moments, parts of the surrounding walls were blown away. The explosion caused the walls of two ground-floor rooms to collapse completely, and cracks appeared in the roof and beams. Cracks were also found in two adjacent rooms.

Afsar Uddin stated that approximately 50 students used to study at the madrasah. However, as Friday is a weekly holiday, the madrasah was closed at the time of the explosion.

Those injured in the incident include the madrasah director, Sheikh Al Amin (32), his wife, Asiya Begum (28), and two of their three children—Umayet (10) and Abdullah (7). Among the injured, the wife and two children were first taken to a local hospital. Later, the on-duty doctor referred them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

It was learned that madrasah activities were conducted in three rooms on one side of the building. On the other side, the director, Sheikh Al Amin, had been living with his family in one room for the past three years.

The house owner, Parvin Begum, said Mufti Harun had been running the madrasah in her rented house for three years. Later, he handed over responsibility for running the madrasah to his brother-in-law, Al Amin, and Al Amin’s wife, Asiya. Harun used to visit the madrasah occasionally and regularly monitored its activities. However, she said she had no idea what was happening behind the façade of the madrasah.

Speaking late Friday night, South Keraniganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Alam said the bomb disposal unit recovered cocktails, flammable substances, and various equipment from the scene. A general diary has been filed with the police, and the wife of the madrasah owner, Al Amin, is being questioned in custody.
