Jamaat Ameer Urges Govt to Secure Urgent Fuel Supply Through Global Partners
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and leader of the opposition in
parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman has called on the government to urgently
explore alternative fuel supply channels through international
partners, warning that the ongoing global conflict poses a serious
risk to Bangladesh’s social and economic stability.
In a post on his verified Facebook page, Rahman wrote that the war
situation had intensified Bangladesh’s energy crisis and cautioned
that if global conditions remain unchanged, the country’s economic and
social activities could face significant negative consequences.
He specifically stressed the need to prevent the emergence of new
syndicates that might exploit the crisis to manipulate fuel supplies
and prices, calling for strict enforcement measures alongside the
search for alternative sources.

Bangladesh’s acute import dependency
Bangladesh imports approximately 95 percent of its fuel. With the
Strait of Hormuz closure disrupting shipments from the Gulf, the
Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation has already imposed daily rationing,
limiting car purchases to 10 litres and motorcycles to 2 litres per
day. Experts have suggested that Bangladesh should urgently explore
purchases from alternative suppliers including Russia, Azerbaijan,
Malaysia and India to buffer against further disruption.
Dr Rahman’s intervention reflects growing political pressure on the
government to demonstrate a proactive energy strategy as the Iran
conflict continues to rattle global markets.
