Deadly barriers cropping up
In sub-Saharan Africa, ancient elephant migration corridors are increasingly severed by farming expansion, fences and development. The African elephant populations now face sharp rises in human–elephant conflict, including dozens of fatalities and injuries among villagers and animals alike. Conservationists warn the trend may accelerate species decline unless urgent interventions occur.
Complex conservation and development challenge
Villages living adjacent to elephant ranges describe a changed reality—what was once seasonal passage now feels unpredictable and dangerous. With retaliatory killings increasing, efforts to safeguard elephant habitats and ensure human safety are gaining urgency. Experts call for restored corridors, community engagement and data-driven land-use planning as key responses.
