On Monday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged Sri Lanka to invest in Bangladesh’s tourism sector, highlighting the mutual benefits for both countries. She made this appeal during a courtesy meeting with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe in New Delhi. The leaders were there for the oath-taking ceremony of India’s newly elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Focus on Tourism and Mutual Cooperation
Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud shared details of the meeting, stating that discussions centered on attracting Sri Lankan investment into Bangladesh’s tourism, leveraging Sri Lanka’s advanced position in the sector. The conversation also touched upon cooperation in agriculture and maritime sectors.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
“The meeting was a courtesy call, but it covered the entire spectrum of bilateral relations,” said Hasan. President Wickremesinghe expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Hasina for Bangladesh’s financial support during Sri Lanka’s difficult times.
Invitation to Visit Bangladesh
Prime Minister Hasina extended an invitation to President Wickremesinghe to visit Bangladesh. While the Sri Lankan president expressed his interest, he mentioned that upcoming elections in his country might affect his schedule.
Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen and PM’s Press Secretary M Nayeemul Islam Khan were present during the briefing.
