Your Phone May Lose Network Without IMEI Registration: Full NEIR Compliance Guide for Bangladesh

Sarakhon Report

Using a smartphone in Bangladesh is no longer as simple as buying it and inserting a SIM card. To stay active on mobile networks, every device must have its IMEI number registered in the national database through the NEIR portal. Whether purchased locally or abroad, a handset will remain usable only if it is properly registered.

Why IMEI Registration Matters

Every mobile phone has a unique IMEI number that identifies its model, origin, and legality. This system helps authorities block stolen phones, detect cloned or counterfeit devices, track illegal imports, and strengthen consumer protection and national security.

How to Check if Your Phone is Already Registered

Step 1 — Get your IMEI:
Dial *#06# on your phone to view the IMEI.

Step 2 — Validate the status:
– Dial *16161# and enter your IMEI to check if it is registered.
– Or send an SMS: type KYD IMEI and send it to 16002.

If the response shows “Valid/Registered,” your device is already in the system.
If it shows “Not Registered/Illegal,” you must complete online registration.

How to Register Through the NEIR Portal

  1. Visit neir.btrc.gov.bd and create a citizen account
  2. Go to Special Registration
  3. Enter your IMEI, brand, model, and purchase details
  4. Upload NID/passport, proof of purchase, or travel documents for foreign-bought phones
  5. Submit the application and track status (Approved / Pending / Rejected)

Risks of Not Registering Your Phone

  • Unregistered or cloned IMEI devices may gradually lose mobile network access
  • Newly added devices may be blocked after warnings
  • Ownership verification becomes harder if the phone is stolen
  • Insurance and warranty claims may be rejected without proper registration

What to Keep in Mind

– Most official distributor phones are already registered
– Foreign or gifted phones must be checked immediately
– Always review updated NEIR instructions before submitting documents
