Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) Reduces Early Miscarriage Risk by 30%

Sarakhon Report

According to the latest data from the JiVita study, taking Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) before conception significantly reduces the risk of early miscarriage by up to 30 percent. In regions where malnutrition is common, early nutritional support plays a crucial role in increasing the chances of a healthy pregnancy.

ICDDRB’s 65th Anniversary and Special Seminar

To mark its 65th anniversary, ICDDRB organized a special seminar titled “Half a Century of Nutrition Research in South Asia.” Diplomats, scientists, former officials, development partners, and staff attended the event held at the Sasakawa Auditorium in Mohakhali. The program highlighted six decades of ICDDRB’s contributions to public health research and services.

Welcome Remarks: Gratitude and the Importance of Research Impact

Executive Director Dr. Tahmeed Ahmed expressed gratitude to ICDDRB’s donors, collaborators, corporate partners, and former staff. He emphasized that the organization values not the number of research papers, but the impact of its research—how it brings real change to people’s lives. He also highlighted the dedication of researchers, field-level teams, and the contributions of both international and local partners.

Messages and Support from International Partners

The message of Tracy Ann Jacobson, the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, was read by Sushmita Khan, Senior Health Specialist of the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka. The message noted that since 1979, the U.S. has supported ICDDRB’s research. This partnership has strengthened public health policies and healthcare systems in Bangladesh and globally.

Canada’s High Commissioner Ajit Singh stated that ICDDR, B’s integrated model of research and healthcare has earned international trust. He also stressed the importance of addressing health risks faced by vulnerable communities.

Five Decades of Nutrition Research in South Asia

The keynote presentation was delivered by Professor Keith P. West Jr., pediatric nutrition expert at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He shared insights from five decades of research, starting from the 1974 famine, highlighting Bangladesh’s global contributions in combating micronutrient deficiencies, improving maternal nutrition, and reducing child mortality across South Asia.

Based on findings from Bangladesh’s JiVita study, he emphasized that improving women’s nutrition before conception is crucial for maternal and newborn health.

MMS Significantly Reduces Early Miscarriage Risk

Referring to the latest JiVita data, Professor West stated that taking Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) before pregnancy reduces the risk of early miscarriage by nearly 30 percent. In areas where malnutrition is widespread, early nutritional support can be a key determinant of a healthy pregnancy.

Historical Gifts and Recognition of Partnerships

During the event, Professor West presented ICDDRB Executive Director Dr. Tahmeed Ahmed with items from his personal collection, including ancient maps of Bangladesh, early measurement tools used for oral rehydration solution, and several historical books.

Two-Day ICDDRB Day Celebrations

ICDDR, B Day was celebrated over two days:

26 November:
Colorful funfair marketplace with craft, food, and clothing stalls, along with research exhibitions by different departments.

27 November:
A science-based seminar revisited the institution’s founding goals, long-standing research, and its global partnerships. ICDDR,B’s contributions to global public health have earned it spots on TIME magazine’s “Best Inventions” and “TIME Health 100” lists.

Future Vision: Advancing Global Public Health
