Tata Electronics to build 2 more fabs in Dholera
Hindustan Times,
Tata Electronics intends to set up two more semiconductor fabs in Dholera, Gujarat as part of its long-term plan to build chips locally and cater to global demand, according to two people directly aware of the company’s strategy.
While Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) is the partner for the ₹91,000-crore first phase, the group will take a call on the timing of the second and third fabs, and whether to go with PSMC or look at alternatives, one of the people said on the condition of anonymity.
The next phase will likely begin in five to seven years, while the first fab is expected to start production by 2026. The two more fabs being planned “will be of the same scale as the first one”, said the person. “The nodes and technology will be decided once the first fab is at full capacity and will depend on the global demand and technology development within the semiconductor industry,” the person said.
At present, foundation work is on for the first fab, said a senior government official, who also Times requested anonymity. The company broke ground at the site in the Dholera Special Investment Region in March.
Judiciary should register as a political party: Asif
The News,
KARACHI: On Sunday, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif took to X (formerly Twitter) and quipped that: “It seems that one more clause will have to be included in the package of constitutional amendments. The judiciary should — under the doctrine of necessity — register itself with the Election Commission of Pakistan under the Political Parties Act.
What do you think?”
The defence minister’s pointed tweet seemed to be in response to the SC’s Saturday clarification order in which eight judges of the apex court criticized the ECP for allegedly trying to create confusion about the SC’s July 12 ruling that declared the PTI eligible for reserved seats in parliament, saying that the ECP’s request for clarification was an
attempt to delay implementing the decision.
The defence minister’s tweet can also be seen as a reaction to outrage online and by the opposition regarding the government’s attempt to bring about a ‘constitutional package’ that is rumoured to include various amendments including changing the age of retirement of the superior judiciary; the setting up of a constitutional court; and an
amendment to Article 63A.
Tweets and vlogs by journalists and lawyers also claimed on Sunday that lawyers would en-masse ‘reject’ any such constitutional amendments. Meanwhile, speaking to Geo News, Khawaja Asif asserted on Sunday that the government had achieved the magic number in both the upper and lower houses of parliament for the passage of the constitutional amendment, also claiming the support of Maulana Fazl after “his reservations are removed”.
Roads around Trump International Golf Club still closed nine hours after apparent assassination attempt
CNN, Kathleen Magramo
The presence of law enforcement outside Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach remains heavy, and the road nearest the apparent assassination attempt was still closed nine hours after the incident, CNN Correspondent Randi Kaye reported from the scene.
Heavily trafficked roads around the golf club are also still closed and there has been a regular stream of police vans going in and out of the gates. At Summit Boulevard, just in front of the golf club gate, there are a lot of bushes
between where the 5th and 6th hole comes together, Kaye said, where perhaps somebody could have poked their way through until they reached the fence.
The person detained in connection with the apparent assassination attempt is Ryan Wesley Routh, according to three law enforcement sources.“We understand from law enforcement that he was very calm. He wasn’t displaying any emotion,” Kaye said.
Trump International Golf Club abuts three heavily trafficked roads: Kirk Road, Summit Boulevard and Congress Avenue. The Palm Beach International Airport is also nearby.
Ishiba leads Koizumi in Japan leadership race: Nikkei poll
Nikkei Asia,
TOKYO — Shigeru Ishiba, former secretary-general of the Liberal Democratic Party, has taken the lead from former Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi in the latest Nikkei opinion poll asking who the best choice is to lead the LDP.
Since the LDP is the ruling party in Japan, the party’s next president would presumably become the new prime minister. The LDP presidential election will take place on Sept. 27.
The poll by Nikkei and group broadcaster TV Tokyo ran from Friday to Sunday, asking respondents to choose one from the nine lawmakers who have thrown their hats into the ring.
Ishiba was the most popular choice at 26%, followed by Koizumi at 20%. Support for Ishiba rose 8 percentage points since the August poll, while support eroded by 3 points for the son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Sanae Takaichi, minister in charge of economic security, came in third at 16%,followed by Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa at 6%, Digital Transformation Minister Taro Kono at 5% and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi at 5%. Support for Takaichi and Hayashi rose 5 and 3 points, respectively.
Rounding out the ranking are Takayuki Kobayashi, who preceded Takaichi as minister in charge of economic security, at 3%, LDP Secretary-General Toshimitsu Motegi at 2% and former Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato at 1%.
Ishiba was also the top pick among LDP-supporting respondents specifically, chosen by 25%. The biggest opposition party, the Constitutional Democratic Party, will choose its leader on Sept. 23.
When respondents were asked what issues they would like to see discussed in the two party leadership elections, with multiple responses allowed, the top response was inflation measures at 34%, followed by pensions and the economy in general at 32% each, and measures related to child rearing, education and the low birth rate at 29%.
‘Water Is Coming.’ Floods Devastate West and Central Africa
New York Times,
Aishatu Bunu, an elementary schoolteacher in Maiduguri, a city in Nigeria’s northeast, woke up at 5 a.m. to the sound of her neighbors shouting.
When she opened her front door, she was greeted by the sight of rising waters outside. “We saw — water is coming,” Ms. Bunu said.
In a panic, she and her three young children grabbed some clothes and her educational certificates and fled their home into waters that quickly became chest high, eventually finding temporary shelter at a gas station.
Ms. Bunu was speaking on Friday from the bed of a truck that she managed to board with her children after several days of sheltering at various sites across the flood-stricken city. The floodwaters inundated Maiduguri early last week
after heavy rainfall caused a nearby dam to overflow.
Flooding caused by the rain has devastated cities and towns across west and central Africa in recent days, leaving more than 1,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands of homes destroyed. Up to four million people have
been affected by the floods and nearly one million forced to flee their homes, according to humanitarian agencies.
The exact number of deaths has been difficult to tally given the scale of the disaster, and the officially reported figures are not up-to-date. In Nigeria, the authorities said that at least 200 people had died, but that was before the
floods hit Maiduguri, which has added at least 30 people to that toll. In Niger, more than 265 have been reported dead. In Chad, 487 people had lost their lives as of last week. In Mali, which is facing its worst floods since the 1960s,
55 died.
Trump safe after potential assassination attempt at golf course
Washington Post,
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump was unharmed Sunday in what authorities are investigating as another potential assassination attempt, after a man pointed a rifle into a Florida golf course where the former
president was playing.
Police arrested Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old man most recently living in Hawaii who spent recent years trying to join the war in Ukraine, according to online posts and law enforcement officials. Routh has a criminal history
including barricading himself inside a building with a machine gun in 2002, according to public records and news reports.
On Sunday the FBI searched his car as officers looked for clues to a possible motive. Sunday’s incident occurred while Trump was golfing at his course in West Palm Beach, Fla. Following the usual security procedure, a Secret Service agent moved one or two holes ahead of the former president, 300 to 500 yards away, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.
