Chinese smartphone maker Honor has unveiled a bold $10 billion investment in artificial intelligence over the next five years, reinforcing its ambitions to transition from a smartphone brand to an AI-driven tech powerhouse. The announcement, made at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, also marks a deepening partnership with Google, a move that could reshape the competitive landscape of AI-integrated mobile devices.
Strengthening Google Collaboration
As part of its expanding AI capabilities, Honor is working closely with Google and Qualcomm on an AI agent capable of performing complex tasks such as making restaurant reservations based on user preferences. Additionally, the company is leveraging Google Gemini, the tech giant’s latest AI system, for its newest devices.
Further solidifying its relationship with Google, Honor has committed to providing seven years of Android support and security updates for its flagship Magic series—placing it alongside Samsung and Google’s own Pixel devices in offering extended software longevity.
Honor’s Global Ambitions
Once a subsidiary of Huawei, Honor has steadily expanded its international presence, particularly in the premium smartphone segment dominated by Apple and Samsung. Though its global market share outside China remains modest at 2.3% in 2024, up from 1.7% in 2023, its AI-driven innovation and stronger ties with Google could elevate its standing in the competitive smartphone industry.
According to Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, Honor’s deeper integration with Google represents a significant milestone. “Google has traditionally kept Chinese smartphone brands at arm’s length in terms of AI advancements, but this partnership puts Honor on par with Samsung’s Galaxy line and Google’s own Pixel products—a major breakthrough for the company,” he said.
