‘Sundarbans Honey’ is on its way to being registered as a geographical indication (GI) product of Bangladesh. The Department of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks (DPDT) under the Ministry of Industries has initiated the registration process.
Journal Publication and Objection Period
The application, submitted by the Deputy Commissioner of Bagerhat, has been reviewed, and all relevant information has been compiled into a journal. This journal has been sent to the Bangladesh Government Press for publication. If no objections are received within two months of publication, ‘Sundarbans Honey’ will be officially registered as a GI product, according to the Ministry of Industries.
Application History and Examination
The initial application for GI registration was filed on August 7, 2017. Following the application, the DPDT requested additional information, prompting the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) to prepare a report on the nutritional qualities of the honey.
Final Submission and Approval
After a hearing and further requests for information from the district administration of Bagerhat, the final details were submitted on June 27, 2024. With these steps completed, ‘Sundarbans Honey’ is close to achieving its GI status, ensuring recognition and protection for this unique product.
