China’s ambassador to Brazil, Zhu Qingqiao, has called for Brazil to join the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a strategic move to enhance bilateral relations. Speaking at a China-Brazil Business Council event in São Paulo, Zhu emphasized the potential synergies and stability this membership could bring to both nations.

Zhu highlighted that the BRI aligns well with Brazil’s developmental strategies under President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, including re-industrialization and South American integration. He stressed that joining the initiative would support Brazil’s strategic sectors and economic growth.

Potential Economic Benefits
Addressing business leaders and officials, Zhu pointed out that BRI membership could diversify Brazil’s export portfolio, which is currently dominated by soybeans and minerals. He suggested that Chinese investment in strategic areas could promote higher value-added Brazilian products.

US-China Rivalry in Latin America

The US has expressed concerns over China’s growing influence in Latin America. US Southern Command chief Laura Richardson warned of potential sovereignty issues tied to BRI agreements. In contrast, the Chinese embassy dismissed these claims as outdated Cold War mentality, advocating for mutual benefits and respect for sovereignty.

While discussions continue, Zhu remains optimistic about the benefits of BRI for Brazil, hinting at significant infrastructure investments, including connections to the Pacific Ocean via the Chancay port in Peru.
