Bir Protik Mahbub Ahmed Shahid Passes Away

Freedom fighter and recipient of the ‘Bir Protik’ gallantry award, Mahbub Ahmed Shahid, has passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un). He breathed his last on Friday, May 2, at 4:30 PM in the ICU of Kurmitola General Hospital. At the time of his death, he was 71 years old. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.

Contribution to the Liberation War

In the 1971 Liberation War, Mahbub Ahmed Shahid was a courageous guerrilla fighter under Sector 2 as part of Dhaka’s historic ‘Crack Platoon’. He served as the second-in-command of the ‘Maulana Shahid Group’ and led several high-risk guerrilla operations in Dhaka.

One of his most notable acts was leading a daytime bomb attack on Habib Bank in Motijheel on October 19, 1971. His leadership in this operation was exemplary, and it is remembered as one of the war’s most daring and strategically successful missions.

National Recognition and Professional Life

The Government of Bangladesh honored him with the title ‘Bir Protik’ for his extraordinary bravery and contribution to the independence war.

Professionally, he owned Talent International Services and was involved in the indenting business for many years. He was also active in social service. Most recently, he served as the Cabinet Secretary and Treasurer of the Bangladesh Lions Foundation, District 315 A1.

 

Funeral and Burial

The first funeral prayer (Janaza) was held on Friday night at the G Block Jame Masjid in the Bashundhara Residential Area. The second Janaza was held after Fajr prayers on Saturday at the Naya Paltan Jame Masjid.

At 10:30 AM, the Dhaka District Administration presented him with a Guard of Honour at Azimpur Graveyard. At 11:00 AM, he was buried with state honors in the cemetery designated for freedom fighters.

Family’s Appeal to the Nation

Mahbub Ahmed Shahid’s family has requested prayers from the country’s people for the forgiveness of his soul.
