Bangladesh’s 56th Independence and National Day Celebrated in Algiers with Deep Tribute to Martyrs

The Embassy of Bangladesh in Algiers, Algeria, celebrated the 56th Independence and National Day of Bangladesh with due dignity and enthusiasm. The day-long program on March 26 began in the morning with the hoisting of the national flag and the rendition of the national anthem at the embassy premises. The ceremony was led by Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Algeria, Md. Nazmul Huda.

Morning Discussion and Documentary Screening

As part of the celebrations, a discussion session was held at the embassy in the morning. During the event, messages from the President, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, and the State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out by embassy officials. A documentary titled “Notun Surjo” (New Sun), highlighting the history and background of the Liberation War, was also screened.

Remembering the Martyrs and the Sacrifices of the Liberation War

In his speech, Ambassador Md. Nazmul Huda paid deep tribute to all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধ (Great Liberation War). He stated that Bangladesh achieved independence through the supreme sacrifice of three million martyrs, the immense suffering of two hundred thousand women, and significant economic losses. He also paid tribute to the martyrs of the July–August mass uprising of 2024 and expressed gratitude to foreign friends and well-wishers for their contributions to Bangladesh’s independence.

Commitments of the New Government and Development Vision

The Ambassador mentioned that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, formed a new government after a decisive victory. He noted that the government has begun working toward zero tolerance against corruption, establishing the rule of law, accelerating economic growth, creating employment, increasing investment and exports, restoring financial discipline, and strengthening the judiciary and state institutions. He also emphasized initiatives to enhance social protection for vulnerable groups, promote the development of women and children, and improve citizens’ quality of life. The commitment to building a discrimination-free Bangladesh based on transparency, accountability, justice, and equality was also highlighted.

Prayer Session and Participation of Expatriates

Following the discussion, a special prayer session was held seeking eternal peace for the souls of the martyrs of the Liberation War, as well as peace, progress, and prosperity for the country. Embassy officials, staff members, and Bangladeshi expatriates living in Algiers participated in the event.

Grand Reception in the Evening

In the evening, a colorful reception was hosted at the Marriott Hotel in Algiers. The chief guest was Algeria’s Minister for Knowledge Economy, Startups, and Micro-Enterprises, Noureddine Ouadah. The event was attended by political figures of the host country, senior government officials, ambassadors and diplomats from various countries, academics, business leaders, representatives of civil society, youth leaders, leaders of voluntary organizations, distinguished journalists, and Bangladeshi expatriates. A cake-cutting ceremony was held, followed by a dinner for the guests.

Bangladesh’s Candidature for the UN General Assembly

During the reception, Bangladesh’s candidature for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly was highlighted, and support from the international community was sought.

Observance of Genocide Day with Respect and Awareness

Earlier, on March 25, Genocide Day was observed at the embassy with due solemnity. The program began with a one-minute silence in memory of the martyrs of March 25, 1971. Messages from the President and the Prime Minister were read out, followed by the screening of a documentary on the genocide during the Liberation War. In the discussion session, the Ambassador highlighted the historical context of Genocide Day and stressed the importance of educating future generations about this history. Bangladeshi expatriates, Algerian citizens, and embassy officials attended the event.
