Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the world’s richest man with a net worth exceeding $250 billion, has significantly increased his security detail. According to a report by The New York Times, Musk’s security team, which includes up to 20 personnel and a medical professional, now refers to him by the code name “Voyager.” This elite team follows him everywhere, even to the bathroom.
Rising Security Expenses
As Musk’s wealth and public profile grew, so did the threats against him. Reports indicate that Musk’s security expenses have surged in recent years, with bills exceeding six figures in a single month. His security costs peaked at over $163,000 in January 2016, and Tesla’s filings show $2.4 million was spent on Musk’s security in 2023, with an additional $500,000 by early 2024.
Musk’s Security History
Musk wasn’t always accompanied by a security entourage. However, by 2014, he had begun upgrading his security, adding rotating staff to handle errands and assess potential threats. Recent security concerns have included two homicidal threats made against Musk, which were revealed during Tesla’s shareholder meeting in June.
Protecting Musk and His Family
Security concerns extend beyond Musk himself. His father, Errol Musk, shared that security for his South African residence has also been tightened, including installing electrified fences, cameras, and a constant guard presence. Despite these measures, both Musk and his family continue to face escalating risks.
Comparisons to Other Tech Leaders
Musk isn’t alone in stepping up security. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg spent $24 million on personal security in 2023, while Apple allocated over $820,000 to protect CEO Tim Cook. Tesla has also bolstered internal security following threats to key employees, including a $300,000 bitcoin ransom demand made to former CFO Zachary Kirkhorn.
