The Bangladesh government has addressed a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, issued on 12 October 2024, which called on Bangladesh to ensure the safety of Hindus and other minorities during religious festivals. India’s statement also alleged a “systemic pattern of desecration and damage to temples and deities” in Bangladesh.

The Government of Bangladesh categorically rejects these allegations, asserting that they are both unfounded and unnecessary. It acknowledged a few isolated incidents during the festival season, but assured that authorities acted swiftly to maintain peace and security for all communities.

Upholding Religious Harmony and Peaceful Coexistence

Bangladesh has long been a nation of religious tolerance, where people from all faiths live in harmony. The government emphasized that everyone in the country, regardless of their religion, has the right to freely practice their faith. The peaceful celebration of Durga Puja across more than 32,000 Puja Mandaps throughout Bangladesh stands as a testament to this commitment.

Theft Investigation at Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple

The statement also addressed a recent theft at the Jeshoreshwari Kali temple in Satkhira, where a golden crown was stolen. The government confirmed that regular puja rites were performed until the theft occurred, and four arrests have been made in connection with the case. An investigation is ongoing to determine how the valuable item was left unguarded.

The government reassures both its citizens and the international community that it remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and rights of all, particularly religious minorities.
