Across Africa, electric motorbikes are rapidly gaining popularity, offering a cleaner, cost-effective alternative to petrol-powered bikes. In Nairobi, Ke nya, electric bikes are becoming a common sight, with local drivers like Stephen Omusugu switching to electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce costs and increase earnings. Stephen, a motorcycle taxi driver, now makes 2.5 times more per day with his new e-bike compared to his previous petrol bike.

A Growing Trend Across the Continent
Nairobi is not alone in this transition. Uganda’s capital, Kampala, and Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, have also seen a rapid rise in electric motorbikes. The continent’s largest EV manufacturer, Spiro, claims over 20,000 e-bikes are now on African roads. Ethiopia has emerged as a leader with over 100,000 EVs, following its ban on petrol and diesel vehicle imports.

Economic and Environmental Benefits
Electric motorbikes offer significant cost savings over their petrol-powered counterparts, requiring less maintenance and cheaper charging. According to Ampersand, an EV startup, electrifying Africa’s two-wheeler transportation could save billions in fuel costs and reduce pollution in the continent’s growing cities.

Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite these benefits, challenges remain. Expanding electric vehicle infrastructure beyond major cities is difficult, and fluctuating electricity supply in some regions may hinder adoption. However, the movement toward electrification, even if limited to urban areas, could dramatically reduce pollution and transform Africa’s transport sector.
