Horror stories often remind us of international films, but Bangla cinema has yet to captivate audiences with its unique horror genre. However, that is beginning to change with the release of “Modern Bengali Hotel”, a three-episode series that blends folklore, fantasy, and psychological horror. Now available on the OTT platform Charuki, this series is redefining the horror genre in Bangladesh.
The Series: A Culinary-Driven Horror Journey
The anthology series draws its inspiration from local Bengali dishes, with each episode showcasing a different traditional meal intertwined with supernatural elements. The first two episodes, “Boal Machher Jhol” and “Khasir Paya”, have already been released, while the third episode, “Haasher Saloon”, is set to premiere soon. The series stars Mosharraf Karim alongside Nidra Neha, who bring the gripping tale to life.
“Adhunik Bengali Hotel” is a fusion of psychological horror, local mythology, and food culture. Each episode not only tells a chilling tale but also features a specific Bengali dish, adding a unique twist to the typical horror narrative. The series explores the balance between belief and disbelief, offering viewers both a taste of local cuisine and a hauntingly eerie experience. The stories are based on Shariful Hasan’s short stories, with each episode directed by young filmmaker Kazi Asad, lasting approximately 40 minutes.
