Brazil’s aviation regulator, ANAC, has suspended regional airline Voepass over safety concerns, seven months after a tragic crash near São Paulo claimed 62 lives. The decision follows continued concerns about the airline’s compliance with safety protocols, despite prior warnings and corrective measures.

Flight 2283, an ATR-72 aircraft, crashed on August 9 in Vinhedo while en route from Cascavel to São Paulo. A preliminary investigation suggested ice buildup on the aircraft, though no definitive cause was confirmed. ANAC had been closely monitoring Voepass since the accident and cited a “breach of trust” regarding the airline’s internal safety processes as the reason for the suspension.

Compliance Failures and Growing Troubles

In October, ANAC directed Voepass to take corrective steps, including reducing its flight network and increasing aircraft maintenance time. However, an inspection in February found significant “degradation” in the airline’s management system and repeated failures to meet safety standards.

 Voepass Responds

Voepass acknowledged the suspension order and stated that it is working to demonstrate compliance with the regulator’s safety requirements. The airline, which operates ATR turboprop aircraft, is Brazil’s fourth-largest carrier but holds less than 1% of the national market share.

Future Uncertain for Voepass

The suspension adds to Voepass’ ongoing struggles. The airline filed for debt restructuring last month, raising concerns that it may be heading toward bankruptcy protection. The Brazilian Ministry of Ports and Airports supported ANAC’s decision, emphasizing the importance of governance improvements and stricter safety standards.

ANAC has stated that Voepass must fully comply with safety regulations before it can resume operations. Until then, its future remains uncertain.
