A New Beginning With Pakistan: Foreign Minister May Soon Visit Bangladesh

After a long period of chilly relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan, for the first time a remarkable change in the relationship between the two countries has emerged. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, might soon visit Bangladesh.

Bilateral Diplomatic Efforts

High-Level Meeting in Dhaka
The 6th Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) will be held through the upcoming visit of the Foreign Minister and Secretary of Foreign Affairs to Dhaka. It is expected that during this meeting a blueprint outlining the future relationship between the two countries will be finalized.

Representation from Pakistan
Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary, Amina Beluch, will represent the country at the meeting. The agenda will include efforts to achieve coordination on various political, economic, and social issues.

High-Level Visit and Economic Cooperation

Possible Dates for the Visit
The visit of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to Dhaka is being considered, with preliminary information suggesting that the visit may take place from April 22 to April 24.

Potential for Increased Trade and Connectivity
Currently, bilateral trade amounts to about US$700 million. However, if trade policies and restrictions are relaxed, this figure could increase to as much as US$3 billion. Furthermore, there is a possibility of resuming a direct maritime route and restarting suspended flights between Chittagong and Karachi.

Significance of Recent Discussions

During the meeting held in Dhaka, Pakistan’s Additional Foreign Secretary for Asian and Pacific Affairs, Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, and Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, Md. Jashim Uddin, both highlighted the importance of the discussions.

Opportunities for Multilateral Cooperation

There is potential for taking new initiatives to boost cooperation in various areas, including border management, alongside the development of regional relations under the frameworks of SAARC, the OIC, and the D-8.
