Today, the Appellate Division directed the Dhaka South City Corporation to duly comply with the thirty-day status quo order received in view of the writ petition filed in the High Court against the Miranzilla Harijan Colony (Ward No. 33 Banshal, Dhaka South City Corporation) to stop the eviction proceedings and at the same time the next date of hearing has been fixed tomorrow on July 11, 2024.
It is noted that on June 11, Dhaka South City Corporation started eviction of Harijan residents in Mironzilla and the houses of 16 families living there were demolished without adequate security and alternative arrangements. Challenging this illegal eviction process, three High Court lawyers filed a writ case in the High Court on June 13.
After hearing this petition, the High Court bench passed a 30-day status quo order on the illegal eviction proceedings. At the same time, he gave an interim order to the Dhaka South City Corporation to arrange temporary accommodation for the affected residents. But the Dhaka South City Corporation filed a leave to appeal against the 30-day status quo order without providing temporary accommodation to the affected residents.
Chamber Bench, instead of issuing any order, a date stated 4 July has fixed for hearing. But the hearing was not preceded but fixed another date on 11 July.
Today on July 10, the petitioners’ lawyers brought the matter to the notice of the Appellate Division on an urgent basis, seeking a stay on the eviction proceedings. Later, after hearing the matter, the court passed an order to maintain the status quo on the eviction process.
