A request to “pass and look after them—that is, the Hindus”: Bimala Sarker presents a garland and money to Rumin Farhana

Sarakhon Report

An elderly woman has requested Barrister Rumin Farhana, an independent candidate from the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, to look after “them—that is, the Hindus” if she wins the election, after handing over a small amount of money according to her means. At the same time, she offered an emotional blessing, wishing for Rumin Farhana’s safety and success.

The incident took place on Thursday evening at a views-exchange meeting with local residents in Dhauria village of Sarail upazila. At the venue, the elderly woman—identified as Bimala Sarker—approached Rumin Farhana and first placed a marigold garland around her neck. She then handed her a one-thousand-taka note.

Bimala Sarker said she wanted Rumin Farhana to pass (win) the election. Explaining that the money was meant to help with campaign expenses, she asked that, after passing, Rumin Farhana should look after “them—that is, the Hindus” and remember their concerns.

Rumin Farhana accepted the money from the elderly woman and, as a gesture of respect and affection, placed the garland back around Bimala Sarker’s neck. The moment created an emotional atmosphere at the gathering.

It may be noted that Rumin Farhana is contesting the election as an independent candidate from the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency. For running outside the party’s decision, she has been expelled from her post as BNP’s Central Assistant Secretary for International Affairs. In this seat, the BNP-led alliance has nominated Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh’s Vice-President, Junaid Al Habib, as its candidate.
