Developing nations blast $300 billion COP29 climate deal as insufficient

Countries at the COP29 summit in Baku adopted a $300 billion a year global finance target on Sunday to help poorer nations cope with impacts of climate change, a deal its intended recipients criticised as woefully insufficient.

The agreement, clinched in overtime at the two-week conference in Azerbaijan’s capital, was meant to provide momentum for international efforts to curb global warming in a year destined to be the hottest on record.

A female captive has been killed in an Israeli strike in northern Gaza, according to a statement by Hamas’s armed wing, as Israel continued its deadly military operation and ordered forced evacuation of Palestinians in Gaza City on Sunday.

Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Obeida said late on Saturday that contact had been re-established with the woman’s captors after several weeks, and it was determined that she had been killed in a northern Gaza area where the Israeli army has been operating.

‘Not everything we wanted but it is step forward’ – UK energy minister

UK’s energy minister Ed Miliband says the last-minute deal secured late last night in Baku was a “critical eleventh hour deal at the eleventh hour for the climate”.

“It is not everything we or others wanted but it is a step forward for us all,” he said shortly after nations agreed to offer developing countries $300bn a year by 2035 to tackle climate change.

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction is being held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25. This is the second time that an IPL auction is taking place outside of the country, following last year’s event held in Dubai.

Day One of the Indian Premier League Player Auction will witness the names of 84 cricketers — the first 12 sets — being called by the auctioneer Mallika Sagar. It means that the likes of Faf du Plessis, Sam Curran and Prithvi Shaw will be up for grabs at the start of Day Two.
