Bangladesh High Commission in Pretoria Celebrates Independence and National Day 2026

The Bangladesh High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, celebrated the Great Independence and National Day 2026 with due dignity and a festive atmosphere. On this occasion, a reception was hosted on 26 March at the Javett Art Centre of the University of Pretoria.

The day’s program began in the morning with the hoisting of the national flag and the playing of the national anthem. At the start of the reception, the national anthems of both South Africa and Bangladesh were performed.

In his welcome speech, Bangladesh High Commissioner Shah Ahmed Shafi said that Bangladesh and South Africa share historical similarities in their struggles for independence, dignity, and democratic governance. He expressed interest in further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries in areas such as trade and investment. He noted that Bangladesh has emerged as the world’s second-largest exporter of ready-made garments and remains committed to expanding mutually beneficial cooperation with international partners. He also wished success for the newly formed government of Bangladesh.

The chief guest at the event was South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Social Development, Ganief Hendricks. In his speech, he praised Bangladesh’s development progress and economic achievements. He stated that South Africa considers Bangladesh an important partner and is keen to expand bilateral cooperation further. He expressed hope that the friendly relations between the two countries would continue to grow stronger.

Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mr. Ganief Hendricks, wrapped up the  two-day Policy Colloquium: From Social Grants to Growth held in Sandton,  Johannesburg, emphasising that South Africa must move “from temporary relief

Approximately 200 diplomats, including ambassadors and high commissioners from various countries and their spouses, attended the event. In addition, around 100 members of the Bangladeshi diaspora living in South Africa were also present.

The reception continued from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. At the end of the event, a rich lunch was served for the invited guests.
