Four Canadian citizens were executed in China earlier this year on drug-related charges, Canadian authorities have confirmed. The identities of the individuals—who were dual citizens—have not been disclosed.

Canada Condemns Executions, Calls for Clemency

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly revealed that Ottawa had been working for months to prevent the executions, engaging in diplomatic efforts alongside former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. A spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada reiterated the country’s firm opposition to capital punishment, stating that Canada had “repeatedly called for clemency at the highest levels.”

China Defends Its Actions

Beijing justified the executions, insisting they were carried out “in accordance with the law.” The Chinese embassy in Canada claimed there was “solid and sufficient” evidence against the individuals and accused Ottawa of making “irresponsible remarks.” China, which does not recognize dual citizenship, has some of the strictest drug laws in the world, though executions of foreign nationals remain rare.

Diplomatic Fallout

The incident has further strained Canada-China relations, which have been tense since 2018, when Canada arrested Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou at the request of the U.S. In response, China detained two Canadians, both of whom were later released. More recently, tensions have escalated over allegations of Chinese interference in Canadian elections and trade disputes.

Amnesty International Canada condemned the executions, calling them “shocking and inhumane.” The organization also raised concerns about other Canadians currently on death row in China.

Joly reaffirmed Canada’s stance against the death penalty and vowed to continue advocating for Canadians facing similar situations.
