Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for stronger international pressure on Russia, insisting that sanctions must not only continue but be reinforced. With more than three years of full-scale war, he urged world leaders to take decisive action to weaken Russia’s ability to sustain its military campaign and move toward peace.

U.S. Meeting with Trump Ends in Fallout

Zelenskyy’s efforts to secure continued U.S. support faced a major setback after a February 28, 2025, meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office. Initially intended to finalize a mineral resources agreement, the talks quickly derailed. Trump and Vice President JD Vance openly criticized Zelenskyy, questioning Ukraine’s gratitude and commitment to peace. The meeting ended abruptly without any agreements, and soon after, the U.S. suspended military aid to Ukraine. This marks a significant downturn in U.S.-Ukraine relations, raising concerns over Ukraine’s ability to sustain its defense efforts.

Ukraine Struggles to Gain Middle Eastern Support

Following his difficulties with the U.S., Zelenskyy sought diplomatic backing in the Middle East. He visited Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, aiming to build stronger economic ties and gain strategic support. However, both nations remained non-committal, maintaining a careful balance in their relationships with Russia and the West. The reluctance of Middle Eastern nations to take a clear stance has left Ukraine without much-needed additional diplomatic and financial support.

U.S.-Russia Talks Move Forward Without Ukraine

As Ukraine’s search for new allies stalls, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has engaged in discussions with Russian officials, about potential resolutions to the war. These talks, which notably exclude Ukrainian representatives, have fueled concerns in Kyiv that Ukraine’s future could be negotiated without its direct involvement. The secrecy surrounding these discussions has further complicated Ukraine’s diplomatic standing.

As Zelenskyy continues to push for sanctions, military aid, and security guarantees, his calls for “active pressure” on Russia face resistance from key allies. The diplomatic landscape is shifting, leaving Ukraine in an increasingly uncertain position as the war grinds on.
